Well. That's the worst part. We did see it coming.
Afterwards, after it was all over, nearly everyone admitted that they had seen a zombie at some point in their lives. Out of the corner of their eye. Down the street. A passing glimpse.
Some people admitted -- and it felt so wonderful to be able to finally speak freely -- that they had seen a zombie close-up, or had even fought with one, but had kept their mouths shut out of fear of being thought crazy.
There were a couple of news reports at first, too. But then the government cracked down. "There are no zombies," they said. "Zombies do not exist."
"Anyone who claims to have seen a zombie is obviously crazy."
So. There were no news reports to warn people.
There were people on the fringe, of course, as there always are. They would write in their blogs about zombies, and try to warn the few who would listen, but overall they were laughed at and ridiculed.
