Lille's circus.

WOWOWOWOW! I've left DA for few days and when I came back I see a DD! Thank you very much for this feature, Kaz-D!

I'm pretty surprised by all the comments about the elephant. Actually I've not given a thought about it before you made me notice. I don't know circus world enough to judge about it but I guess you're not totally wrong.

Wow, i love this.
As for my thoughts on using these animals in form of entertainment, not every circus abuses their critters.
many of the animals are trained to do what they do like a normal training for dogs and cats
I love when they have them on show, they are beautiful on the stage
the main reason they go "rogue" is partly b/c they are still wild animals, that instinct is still there.
BUT anyways, this picture is gorgeous

I'd doubt it, so long as they were treated fine in the training and used right, the tusks are very strong and firm :)

A beautifully taken photo, but the atrocity of the content overpowers it for me unfortunately. No animal should have a life like this. Circus animals are frequently abused and on top of that are not living in their natural environment. Circuses that use animals are purely cruel. I am not criticizing you, photographer. Just the circus.

*sarcasm* Oh yes, terribly tragic, I can barely believe it. *sarcasm ends*

I love animals, but not all circus' torture their animals. It's not some terrible tragic horrid thing. It's really not. Why don't you all get facts straight and come back when you know more, kay? The animals don't always suffer, they don't always live in cramped cages with little food, they're not all beat and whipped and tortured, and they're not all treated badly.

I never said it was my photo, that was your mistake not mine.

I do research. I research quite a bit actually because I was interested in this particular topic (circus animals). I work with animals too. There are a few things wrong with what you just posted.
1.) How am i supposed to know this is a reliable source? Hm?
2.) Ringling Brothers isn't everybody is it? Even if it was proven that that's how they break their elephants Ringling Brothers is one circus.
3.) Ringling Brothers opened an elephant saving 'association' or whatever it's called. I don't remember the name off the top of my head but that makes me a bit less suspicious of how they treat their elephants.
4.) Do not tell me what to do, and do not tell me I have not done my research because I have. Thank you.

I care a lot about animals, A LOT, but for how much people scream and cry and complain and fight against circuses I have seen very little actual hard evidence of these 'crimes' they commit against their animals.

its doesnt matter who it is. research some more because you obviously havnt done enough. look, do u see the picture? ive never seen ne elephant do something like that on their own. im not whining about it..i love elephants, i love the circus..but i kno how their treated in ne circus..so i dont go to any that use them. and even if this circus in the picture didnt abuse this elephant..or evn broke it (which i highly doubt) ..it isnt right..their bodies arent meant to do that..just a matter of opinion that u jumped into..dont get all bent out of shape

Do you work in a circus? Do you train animals for things like the circus? Have you ever even been backstage at a circus? Do you live your life around elephants? Probably not. I'm not getting bent out of shape, I'm arguing my opinion same as you. I already told you I researched quite a bit, maybe you are the one who needs to do more research. I just don't see how this picture is 'sad and horrible and shows the suffering all elephants must go through to get here' because that's not what it shows. It's really not.

i wasnt the one who said it was "sad and horrible" ..and when u said u work with animals did u mean you take mediocre, noisy photos that lose emphasis among clouded, unnecessary elements and include subject matter such as your pets and random animals that happen to stray into your yard taken with an expensive camera going to waste on someone who from wat i see doesnt kno how to use it..because i dont count that as working with animals..wat exactly do u do?

To everyone bitching about animal rights; have you ever seen the photos winning Pulitzer Prize or World Press Photo awards? Photos of people being shot, tortured, burned, beaten or starving are celebrated all over the world so what's the big deal with one photo from a circus?

Moreover if you see something wrong, taking a photo is the best way of letting the world know that something like that is happening.

This is one of the pictures that I really like , it has what it needs to be consider art
composition
contrast & dramatic points

PETA is certainly not the most reputable source, though your point is a good one. The artist has already said he's been made aware of the controversy, no need to continue badgering him. It is still an incredibly beautiful piece of art, and, though the treatment of animals is a subject I too am passionate about, it does not do at all to dwell on that and not appreciate the photo for what it is.

Fair enough, but if you care about animal rights as you claim you do, then it is deeply disturbing that you can look at this picture and be okay with the content.

I'm not okay with the content, but I don't let that completely overshadow the quality of a photo. I'm not going to condemn the artist for taking it and I'm not going to pretend the photo is an awful piece of work. It's a beautifully shot photo, subject matter or not. It has also brought attention to the controversy as well, getting the cause more exposure even if that's not what the artist intended.

The picture is fine, I like the photo, I just feel as if it makes the whole idea of a preforming elephant seem whimsical and lighthearted. I think people should be aware of what truly happens; once you look at the pictures and read the link I provided, for me at least, the picture is cheapened by the facts.

You don't have to agree with me you know. Whatever you think is cool with me, that is just how I feel.

Not the training but the poor keeping circumstances (as circuses cannot grant large enclosures for them, especially the kinds of those roadshow type circuses - that's why keeping elephants by them is banned in my country) are bad for the elephants. Training itself is good for a captive animal as it keeps it mentally and physically in shape, and the bond between animal and handler strengthens which is quite important in the case of dangerous animals.

Circuses are just as much fun with only human performers.
